Draw of the Fake - Omgpop’s Draw Something ‘Doodle of the Day’

Draw something is a mobile app developed by Omgpop and is available on IOS or Android. It was among one of the apps that won the Flurry App Spotlight Award in 2012 and five weeks after the launch it was downloaded 20 million times. It was then downloaded 50 million times 50 days after the release of the Omgpop game. Both the app and the company are now owned by Zynga.

For those of you who are not familiar with the game, Draw Something is played by two players taking alternating turns between drawing and guessing their partners word.  Provided with 3 random words (which are ranked from least difficult to most difficult) players are rewarded when guessing the words correctly with coins (1 coin=easiest - 3 coins= Hardest). These coins allow players to buy more colours and bombs (used to eliminate letter’s to make guessing the word easier).  The game allows you to connect to your Facebook account and lets you challenge your Facebook friends.
Draw Something the Official page is also on the famous social network Facebook. The page today has over two million likes and runs the daily competition ‘Doodle of the Day’. The competition allows fans of the app to send in screenshots of their Pictionary like drawings. These sketches can either be drawn on a Tablet, IOS or Android. Most of the ‘Doodle of the Day’ drawings that are selected are done via Ipad or Tablet with drawn with a stylus. This has caused allot of controversy between players. But is it really possible that you can get this sort of artistic talent without photoshop? And is using an Ipad or Tablet really cheating?
‘Doodle of the Day’ on the 20th of July was by Poppy S. The drawing is of two giraffes and was the word ‘Neck’. This caused a debate among the fan page users. Not only because of the Ipad which was assumed to of been used but because of the work neck. One fan posted ‘That’s a giraffe aaha they could have drew a human neck. That’s just taking it too far to draw a giraffe’ another fan sarcastically posted ‘because you totally have to draw to giraffes to tell someone its neck.’ While another fan bitterly posted, ‘Very good but a little over done! It wasn’t necessary to draw a giraffe for the word neck! I know you can draw but seriously! SHOW OFF!” Personally I believe these comments are really aggressive after all it’s just a drawing.  The point of ‘Doodle of the Day’ is to show artistic talent and this is how Poppy S. has portrayed the word ‘Neck’. Fans also had ago at creator Omgpop in the same post for selecting this drawing saying  ‘How about showing some people who don't have a pen, an iPad and a degree in Art for once hmm?’

The 2nd of April ‘Doodle of the Day’ was the ‘Avatar’ drawn by Sarah S. This picture was drawn on an Android device or IPhone. This can be assumed because how rough the drawing is. Most of the comments were about how people wouldn’t wait that long for someone to draw something like this for example this comment ‘That is awesome! but I hate when people spend that much time trying to draw something and u only have a few mins to play, cause then it’s like "GET TO THE POINT!!!" lol or when they spend that much time on a drawing, and you waste ten minutes trying to guess it, but u cant and have to pass lol.’ But reading further down the post a comment said this ‘It's called Draw Something, not "Hurry and do the crappiest rendition of this word possible, so as not to waste the other person's precious time".’ They have a point, imagine if this was you. You could draw as well as these people you just take longer and end up with a master piece only to see the other player skip your drawing…it’s the worst feeling, as I have personally experienced this.

April 25th ‘Doodle of the Day’ by Vinny J. was the word was ‘Kanye’ West. At first the photo looks like another well drawn Ipad drawn picture until you read further comments like ‘I think what people are asking about is how is it possible to make the red and orange blend together the way the background is. I have all the colours and I'm a self-employed artist and cannot do this, it is impossible to do the background without lines showing.’ and ‘No guys, this was edited in Photoshop. I don't care how good you are- you can't do GRADIENT transitions in Draw Something. So, unless we're all playing different paid for versions- then this was definitely edited prior to submission.’ and finally this comment ‘If you look, the colour pallet is pixelated. (Boxy and blurry) It was obviously pasted over a separate program. Screams fake.’

These are two example of a photoshoped pictures my parnter posted on facebook to show how easy it is to photoshop any picture on to a Draw Something screen. He has edit the word to draw who his drawing it for and pasted the picture to make it look drawn. This one look really fake but the comments prove my point. The other is a Bart Simpson version, this  is more believeable because of the flat colours in the picture.

So we all know how easy it is to photoshop the ‘Doodle of  the Day’ but is using an Ipad really cheating? I use an android and have a Certificate one and two in art but I honestly don’t think it’s cheating.  Sure its more of an advantage but anyones drawings can become ‘Doodle of the Day’ just takes alittle skill. Here are some of mine…

Is this ‘Doodle of the Day’ real or fake well I guess that’s up to you to decide…but before you do you might wanna check out the link down the bottom…if you wanna cheat ;)
